PROFILE: Established in 1992, the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund is a family foundation that awards grants to charitable organizations that enhance society, primarily those serving the San Francisco, California area. Douglas Goldman is the son of Levi Strauss heirs Richard and Rhoda Goldman. After Richard Goldman died in 2011, the assets of his foundation, approximately $280 million, were split into thirds and distributed to each of his three children. The foundation’s current focus areas are democracy and civil liberties, education and literacy, environment, health and recreation, the Jewish community, and reproductive health and rights.
The Goldman Foundation’s environment grantmaking operates both nationally and locally. Its national goals work to “advance sustainable industry practices throughout the lifecycle of products” and “influence market shifts toward environmentally-responsible materials and decreased use of harmful chemicals.” Its work in the San Francisco Bay Area seeks to “reduce local sources of greenhouse gas emissions and help prepare for the impacts of climate change on Bay Area ecosystems” by promoting “responsible land use and transportation policies and practices” and “strategies to protect natural resources from the effects of climate change.”
Most grants fall in the $10,000 to $100,000 range. Past grantees include 1% for the Planet, Bay Area Climate Collaborative, and Earthjustice.
