PROFILE: Established in 1963, the Eugene M. Lang Foundation is a private family foundation, founded by Eugene M. Lang, who was involved in various manufacturing business ventures. Lang grew up in New York City and was involved with many institutions there. He terminated his business activities in 1997 to devote himself to philanthropy and passed away in 2017 at the age of 98. Foundation giving is “directed to programs, projects and organizations that honor the Founder’s values.” Grantmaking areas of interest are education, the arts, social justice, community and civic responsibility, health and aging, and the preservation of the natural and built environment.
The Lang Foundation’s preservation of the natural and built environment focus area supports organizations that work toward the “preservation of the natural environment and resources,” as well as “buildings of historic significance that enrich the built environment.”
Foundation grants range form $1,000 to $20,000. Grantseekers can view a list of featured projects on the funder’s website. Past grantees include the National Geographic Society, New York Historical Society, and Columbia County Historical Society.
The foundation does not accept unsolicited grant proposals from organizations that are not prior grantees. However, the funder does welcome non-grantees to get in touch to introduce their programs. Grantmaking is typically limited to the New York City and Washington, DC regions.
