PROFILE: Investment banker Richard Gilder founded the Gilder Foundation in 1965. Although this is a sizable foundation in terms of assets, it maintains a low public profile, does not operate a website and employs just two formal staff members. According to tax filings, the foundation’s grantmaking interests appear to be education, performing arts, parks, history, the environment, healthcare, visual arts, public policy and social services. Gilder also awards its disease-related grants through its healthcare giving program. Despite it’s lack of transparency, the foundation’s conservation funding remains broad in order to entertain a range of conservation interests.
Foundation-wide, Gilder grants range from $1,000 to $1 million. Most grants however, fall in the $1,000 to $25,000 range. Past environmental conservation grantees include the Islesboro Islands Trust, which received funding to support its land protection and conservation work; and the Environmental Defense Fund, which received a grant for its climate change and environmental conservation work.
Tax filings indicate that the Gilder Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications and requests for funding.
